Laser hair removal: how many sessions do you really need?

It's the first question asked in consultation: "how many laser hair removal sessions until I'm done?" The honest answer fits in one sentence — on average 6 to 10 sessions for a lasting reduction — but the average hides a lot of nuance. Here is what really makes that number vary.

Why several sessions are essential

The laser only works effectively on a hair in its growth phase (the anagen phase), while it is still connected to a follicle rich in melanin. At any given moment, only a fraction of your hairs are in this phase; the others are resting or shedding, and the laser has no grip on them.

Each session therefore "catches" the fraction of active hairs at that moment. By spacing sessions a few weeks apart, we give new follicles time to enter the growth phase, then treat them in turn. It is this repetition, session after session, that drives hair density down to a stable reduction.

Averages by area

Not every area behaves the same way:

  • Underarms, bikini, lower legs: areas that respond well, often 6 to 8 sessions.
  • Arms, back, chest: 8 to 10 sessions on average, sometimes more on light or fine hair.
  • Face (lip, chin, cheeks): the least predictable area, very sensitive to hormones — 8 to 12 sessions, then maintenance touch-ups depending on the case.

These ranges are indicative. They are no substitute for an assessment, which is the only way to estimate your protocol taking your skin and hair into account.

What lengthens — or shortens — the protocol

  • Hair colour and thickness: dark, thick hair absorbs a lot of energy and responds quickly. Blond, red or very fine hair contains little melanin and takes more patience — sometimes without a complete reduction being possible.
  • Skin type: on light skin as on dark skin, a properly set medical diode laser works, but the settings differ and affect the pace.
  • Hormones: pregnancy, contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause… Hormonal changes can reactivate follicles and make maintenance sessions necessary.
  • Consistency: respecting the recommended interval between sessions and not waxing or plucking between appointments (shaving is fine) clearly changes the results curve.

What results look like, session after session

The first effects are visible from the first 2 to 3 sessions: regrowth is slower, finer, sparser. Over the protocol, whole areas stop growing back. At the end of the protocol, a few scattered, finer hairs usually remain, which are treated in spaced finishing sessions.

The goal is not "guaranteed zero hair for life" — no serious technology promises that — but a significant, lasting reduction, with minimal upkeep.

At GLOW TIME

We work exclusively with the latest-generation medical diode laser, paired with a cooling system that protects the skin and keeps sessions comfortable, including on large areas. Every protocol starts with an assessment: evaluation of the skin and hair, check for contraindications, personalised settings, then an estimate of the number of sessions and the budget.

To combine several areas, our multi-zone price calculator gives you an instant price, and the laser hair removal page details the full run of a session.
