Medical diode laser: why this technology changes everything

"Laser", "IPL", "Alexandrite", "diode"… the vocabulary of permanent hair removal is a marketing minefield. Yet the technology used has a real impact on comfort, safety and results. Here are the differences that actually matter.

Laser or IPL: not the same thing

Intense pulsed light (IPL) emits a broad, poorly targeted spectrum of light. Only part of that energy reaches the melanin in the hair; the rest scatters. It is a useful technology in salons for maintaining already sparse hair, but its action on the follicle is less precise and less consistent than a true laser.

A laser, on the other hand, emits a single, coherent, concentrated wavelength. All the energy is calibrated to be absorbed by melanin and turned into heat at the bulb. The result: more targeted action, more effective sessions, and settings that are genuinely adjustable.

Diode and Alexandrite: two real lasers, two profiles

The Alexandrite laser (755 nm) is strongly absorbed by melanin. It performs well on well-pigmented hair and light skin, but requires a lot of caution as soon as the skin is olive, tanned or dark: the risk of a skin reaction increases.

The diode laser (around 800–810 nm) penetrates deeper into the follicle and is better tolerated on a wide range of skin types. It is now the reference technology for treating very light skin as well as dark skin, provided the settings are adjusted to each person.

Cooling: the detail that makes all the difference

A latest-generation medical diode laser includes a powerful cooling system in the handpiece. It protects the epidermis while the energy works deep down, which allows two things:

  • much more comfortable sessions, including on sensitive areas;
  • fast passes over large surfaces (back, full legs) without multiplying breaks.

Without effective cooling, a session on a large area becomes long and unpleasant — and there is a temptation to lower the power, and therefore the effectiveness.

"Medical" — what does it change?

A medical-grade device offers a wider range of settings (fluence, pulse duration, frequency) and better reproducibility. In practice, the practitioner can personalise each session according to skin type, hair thickness and area, instead of applying a single programme. That is what makes it possible to be both effective and careful.

The right reflex before booking

  • Ask which technology is used (diode, Alexandrite, IPL) and whether the device is medical grade.
  • Check that a preliminary assessment is planned, with a check for contraindications.
  • Be wary of promises of "permanent hair removal guaranteed for life": we are talking about a lasting reduction, with possible maintenance touch-ups.
